During the long summers that Frederic Chopin spent in Nohant from 1839 to 1846, he wrote long letters to his family (his parents and two sisters) established in Warsaw. In May 1844, the father of Chopin died what deeply afflicted the composer. In July, her older sister named Louise, accompanied by her husband, named Calassante, made the trip from Warsaw to Paris where her brother welcomed him: they had not seen each other for 14 years, since Chopin had left the Poland ... They won Nohant early August, where George Sand welcomed them for 3 weeks.
The summers to Nohant that followed that one, were lived by Chopin in nostalgia for the presence of his sister; he applied in his letters to tell them the Nohant they had known with him ...

Letter from Frédéric Chopin to his sister Louise, written in Nohant on July 16, 1845 (Correspondence by Frédéric Chopin, Richard Massé edition, volume 3):
"We have been here for a month. Mrs. Viardot (1) arrived at the same time as we left after three weeks. We all go beautifully. Fever (2) however reigned in the village during the bad season. Francoise's husband (Calasant, no doubt remembers him, was ill during the whole of winter; he is now on his feet. The weather favors us for the moment but at the beginning of our stay, there were great storms. The Indre has overflowed so much that in Montgivray, Chatiron (4), the housewife's brother, had his garden all flooded and water in his home ... The road to Châteauroux was cut off by the flood. It was impossible to reach the place where we often went for a walk and where we discover such a magnificent view ... (5) ».

1: Pauline Viardot, young and already great singer, friend of the couple often received in Nohant at this time.
2: a typhoid fever.
3: Françoise Cailleau, servant of George Sand for 15 years.
4: Hippolyte Chatiron, half-brother of George Sand, familiar with Nohant; he lived in the neighboring village of Montgivray, a beautiful house that became the town hall.
5: This place evoked by Chopin is most certainly the place called Corlay, located about 4 km from Nohant; culminating point on the road of Chateauroux, it allowed a point of view widened on the valley of the Indre. George Sand particularly liked this place where she took everyone!
