The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings

Imagine gathering two dozen Nobel prize-winning scientists together for one week, to meet and exchange ideas with 500 of the brightest, young up-and-coming scientists from around the world. What a great idea for promoting scientific discoveries of the future!

Well, this idea is in fact a reality. For more than 50 years now, a selection of Nobel laureates has met for one week each year in the town of Lindau on Lake Constance in the south of Germany, as part of a unique effort to promote scientific research. This year, 25 Nobel prize-winners in physics came to Lindau to give lectures and to hold discussions with 550 young scientists from 66 countries. And as Geoff Rodoreda reports, it wasn’t all about cortical noise, proton pumps and optical frequency combs -- the 2008 Lindau meeting also examined worldwide concerns such as the energy crisis and climate change.

Educate. Inspire. Connect. The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings.

The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings provide a globally recognised forum for the transfer of knowledge between generations of scientists. They inspire and motivate Nobel Laureates and international Best Talents. Lectures of Nobel Laureates reflect current scientific topics and present relevant fields of research of the future. In panel discussions, seminars and during the various events of the social programme young researchers nominated by a worldwide network of Academic Partners interact with Nobel Laureates. The Meetings of Nobel Laureates in Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine and in Physics have been held since 1951. Since 2004, the holders of the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, have also held biannual meetings on Lake Constance. The Lindau Dialogue has been given extra impulse with the interdisciplinary conferences. These are being organised by the Council and the Foundation every five years starting with the jubilee year of 2000.

Companies, foundations, associations and private patrons on one side, and national and state departments, the International Lake Constance Conference and the European Commission on the other, come together for the benefit of research, the promotion of science and of intercultural dialogue. The Council and the Foundation would like to express their gratitude to the International Lake Constance Conference (IBK) and the Bavarian State Government for their support of this website.
